Elly Collins, from Ballarat Acupuncture writes:
We probably all view acupuncture as ancient, mystical, even a little magical. But it is also scientifically measurable (read here) and very effective!
Most often thought of as a treatment for bodily aches and pains, it’s equally useful at helping clear up many other ailments, both those identifiable and unidentifiable by western medicine. Some common issues we help with are itchy skin during menstruation, bloating after eating, sleepless nights, dry or teary eyes, ringing in the ears, palpitations, stress, irregular menstruation and the list goes on. By the very nature of its ability to balance the physical, emotional and energetic bodies it is highly effective at rooting out and dealing the cause of many problems western doctors simply cannot find.
Hopefully you’re beginning to see that acupuncture is for more than just for muscle pain.
An acupuncturist will be able access your body’s energies by gently inserting needles into the top layers of skin at very specific points along the body’s many meridians, with the points being determined by what, where, how, who, why and when etc. etc. (your acupuncture treatment is a very personal and individual experience). This clears blockages and sends messages to the central nervous system (your brain) to initiate a self-healing response. The human body is actually the most powerful magical aspect of this medicine, that’s right your body!
Our bodies have a well-developed and innate understanding of how to function correctly, but with a lifestyle out of tune to its needs through injury (be it physical or emotional), poor diet or stress not to mention genetic predispositions, it will often go into a kind of ‘lock down’ mode. This ‘lock down’ mode naturally isolates the body’s problems and imbalances, to be dealt with later when times get easier. However, in our modern world, finding time to slow down and let your body address these stored problems or stresses can be difficult, instead we choose to keep on pushing through, causing these issues to become bigger than they ever needed to be.
Although it may seem strange from our western view of medicine to get treatment for these little nuisance symptoms, from a more holistic standpoint those little nuisances are your body’s way of communicating to you that it wants some attention. A well maintained machine rarely breaks down, and a well-trained acupuncturist is highly attuned to deciphering these communications and keeping you in top shape. The deep and inseparable nature of our physical, emotional and energetic bodies mean that although you can’t see it, that sore knee, ringing in your ears, irritability, itchy scalp and trouble sleeping may all be connected and easily treated with a few acupuncture treatments and lifestyle modifications. After all, the history of Chinese medicine is well over 3000 years old… and they’ve picked up a thing or two over the last three millennia. By understanding the complicated world of the balanced and unbalanced body as a whole, with its complimentary and co-operative set of systems, your acupuncturist will use their knowledge and tools to get you feeling your best by helping your body return to its natural state of harmony.
As with all professions, different practitioners will be more drawn to different areas than others and have slightly different methods, it’s very important that you find someone that you trust and feel safe with. I personally have a deep passion for working with women as they prepare for, and journey through the child bearing experience. As a woman’s body’s prepares for, and enters pregnancy it goes into a hyper-receptive, ultra-healing mode, which makes this time a very special and powerful opportunity to heal yourself and support the development of happy, healthy, well balanced little spirits as they prepare themselves for life in this world.
So be it pains and aches, irregular periods, panic attacks, pregnancy, trouble conceiving, or that you just feel that you’re not enjoying in your experience with your body or mind to its fullest, think about contacting your local acupuncturist and let them help you find you natural balance.
