As the cooler weather continues to descend over Ballarat, the familiar dilemma of ‘what can I do with the kids in this weather?’ rolls around again for another year. Step inside the Ballarat Aquatic & Lifestyle Centre (BALC), and you will discover a range of programs available to keep even the most active kids busy!
BALC provides healthy and active opportunities for children of all ages. Starting from as young as 8 weeks, BALC offers a range of programs in a fun and positive environment. Their structured and unstructured programs aim to build confidence, develop social and physical skills and encourage adults to support children’s exploration by being active role models.
While the thought of swimming lessons in the middle of Winter can put a lot of people off, parents and carers should be please to hear the Program Pool sits at a lovely 35 degrees year-round!Suitable for ages 6 months and up, the BALC Swim and Survive program is designed by Royal Life Saving Australia and supported by Life Saving Victoria. But what sets the BALC Swim Program apart from the rest? Their program is delivered by AUSTSWIM qualified staff and is so much more than just swimming lessons. While lessons are fun and effective, the teachers focus on building water confidence, stroke technique and above all else, being safe around water. The varying pool depths in the Learn to Swim Pool mean children learn water skills in both shallow and deeper water.
And the best bit about swimming lessons at BALC? If your child is signed up on a Healthy Kids Membership, they get free swimming year-round which is perfect for practicing between lessons. And if your child is under 5, you get in for free too!
The popular gymnastics program is a fun way to develop the fundamental motor skills required to progress into other forms of physical activity and caters for a range of ages starting from 8 weeks.
The Crawl Play and Balance Play programs assist babies and toddlers with the development of gross motor skills and self-confidence. The engaging 45-minute program uses songs, rhymes and gymnastics equipment to foster a love of being active and learning new skills.
Crawl Play and Balance Play is set in a supportive and social environment and is perfect for new mums to get out and meet new people. Classes run 6 days a week and a free trial is available – just contact the Centre to find out more.
Suitable for children from 5 years and up, the indoor rock climbing wall is not for the faint hearted! With 6 routes to choose from, little thrill seekers can scale to new heights and then descend back to earth with ease using the auto belay system. The new rock climbing sessions are a great family activity and run 5 days a week. Check the website for more details.
