Off the beaten track in Otway St South, Ballarat East, lies this fenced off little gem, perfect for toddlers and runners!
We weren’t even looking for a playground when we spotted this one. Nestled behind a screen of native trees in an open green park, the bright orange colours certainly caught our attention as we were driving past on the way to our favourite butcher in Mt Clear for some delicious smokey bacon.
Not that bacon has anything to do with this! It was all about safely containing our toddler and allowing him to explore without me hovering over his shoulder to prevent him from taking off in any direction and not noticing in time. And aside from most of the equipment having small pools of water (it had rained the night before), it was pretty fun.
Due to the slide being wet, and me being unprepared with no towel, his next favourite was the bouncy mat at the back. Jump jump, bouncy bouncy. The spinning cup was great too, although I got a little dizzy myself and had to find something else to do! There is a flying fox (but you have to be about 10ft tall to reach it), and the metal talking phone pipes, swings and a see-saw.
All surrounded by chip bark and padded rubber matting. Love it!
Within the fenced area is also a couple of picnic tables, a sandpit and some green space with a couple of large trees for shade and playing under. The tree on the left would be perfect for climbing! A really great spot to have a family picnic, or catch up with friends.
Looking south outside the fenced area is a lovely green park. Nothing fancy, there are no bbqs or other tables, but there is a walking track and lots of trees for shade. We didn’t notice any particularly interesting bird life other than magpies, so it may be important to take care of swoopers during Spring, but we had no troubles this time. But I bet you might spot some rosellas or galahs from time to time in this space.
Looking north outside the fenced area is more green space which backs onto a creek, and forms the fence line of Pinarc Disability Services. This is a great spot for kicking a ball, running around, relaxing, walking or whatever takes your fancy here.
There are no toilets or additional facilities here, so it is probably most suitable for a quick stop, rather than a day long family outing. Or just send the kids behind a tree and hold on yourself!
But overall, it’s a great playground. Safely fenced off and most likely pretty quiet. Nobody else was there the 2 times we have driven by lately.
