If you are anything like us, you might be a bit tired of the constant advertising all day on social media, on TV and radio! And when you finally get a chance to have a real conversation with another human the last thing you want is to be SOLD to again! You see it in people’s body language in shopping centres when they run for the hills as the stall holder approaches with a flyer, or the way people avoid eye contact at the local market. And it often happens when you meet an independent sales consultant. Whether it is plastic containers, kids toys, makeup, skin care, nutritional supplements, kitchen gadgets, you name it; If it has anything to do with parties, networks, or direct selling, people run for their lives!
But there are some important differences between Direct Sales and Party Plan, and since many of our readers are Mums (or Dads) often looking for flexible working arrangements, we decided to find out just what Direct Selling IS and how it could be a realistic career opportunity for some of you. So we caught up with Diane Quinn who is a consultant for Rodan & Fields, a premium skin care company, this is what Di had to share.
Tell us about your role as a consultant for Rodan & Fields?
Often when I meet people for the first time they ask what I do. I tell them I have a business which involves direct selling skincare products. On further questioning they often say “so what you mean is you’re a network marketer”. When I say yes that’s correct, I start to notice the hairs stand up on the back of their neck as they try to change the subject. What did you do before that, they ask. I was a nurse I say. Finally they can relax and they go on to ask me more about my life as a nurse. There is just one problem with that though, I don’t want to talk about nursing anymore, I want to talk about my business!
I’m not sure what it is about direct selling that makes people want to run for the hills when this business model is mentioned. For myself, this is the first time I have entered into this field and so far I have benefited from enormous personal growth and a lifestyle that runs to my schedule.
What lead you to becoming a consultant?
When I left nursing I had a dream to start my own business. After researching and looking at different types of businesses, I realised pretty quickly that I didn’t have enough money to get into a franchise or start a business on my own! That was when I discovered network marketing. I researched different types and companies and I was so impressed with Rodan and Fields. The founders of the company are world renowned San Francisco dermatologists and best friends Dr Katie Rodan and Dr Kathie Fields. This is the second billion dollar business they have started as they were the dermatologists behind the brand Proactiv which helped millions of people worldwide deal with acne. I love the concept of literally buying a business in a box!
What do you love about being a direct selling consultant?
Everything you need to achieve your own independence can be done from the comfort of your home. All the products can be ordered online by customers from your personal website and delivered directly to the customers doorstep. Gone are the days of consultants logging orders into a system one by one and then when the products arrive, spending your precious time delivering them to the customer’s home.
Direct selling can improve your lifestyle in many different ways. A lot of people who ask me about this business are women who work part time or full time. They have a family to care for and don’t have enough hours in the day to take on more work but would love a way to make extra money. Another group who see this as an opportunity to contribute to the household budget are “stay at home mums”. Being able to work from home using nothing more than a smart phone to run their business is a very tempting possibility. Some people use the business to pay for family holidays, pay the household bills or as a way to save money to help send the children to university. It really is up to you how big you grow your business.

How can other women (mums) benefit from this type of role?
I have always been passionate about women being able to care for their families but not have to sacrifice caring for children by leaving the house to work. Sometimes it’s not possible to have the children cared for by an outside source. To do this you need family close by or pay for childcare which defeats the purpose of working! I think my Mum would have grabbed an opportunity like this with both hands! With 6 children to care for and a farm to help run there was never enough hours in the day or money in the bank account.
The great thing about this business is that you are never alone. Working as a team is so important to me. Nobody is left floundering or wandering what to do next and regular catch ups are organised to talk through anything that you need. All catch ups are child friendly because we know that getting time away from the family is not always possible! Of course we also make these catch ups super relaxed so you can use this as a girls night, afternoon or morning out!
I know my focus has mostly been directed towards women but rest assured there are plenty of men taking on this business as well because guess what? A lot of men have the same issues as women; they have skin that they would like to care for, they are looking for a flexible working arrangement that suits their lifestyle and family and they have found a product that they truly believe in and want to share with others!
How do people usually find out about Rodan & Fields?
People are generally introduced to Rodan + Fields by attending a product session. For example I do sessions in my own home, some friends have held events in their homes but Rodan + Fields are well aware that people are spending less time at home and usually would not want anyone coming in the front door to see the mess. It takes some time and effort to get our homes presentable to the public and people can’t really be bothered. With that in mind we prefer to offer coffee catch ups which can be at a local cafe during a lunch break, rather than organising a “party” style event at your home. Some consultants have had customers who have held session in a meeting room in their workplace. This is great for people who work in a corporate environment. You do not need to set up a whole room of products to introduce people to them. A few key items in your bag are usually enough. Word of mouth is definitely a large component as well in introducing people to the products.
A thing that has been really effective is Live Facebook videos run by leaders within the team. The idea is to invite people to watch the presentation from the comfort of their home and the leaders run the session and then ask people watching to go back to the consultant who invited them.
What is involved in becoming a consultant?
To become a consultant you can purchase a Business Kit which ranges from $65 for a business portfolio (which includes a quick start business guide & product guide) to $1260 for the Ultimate Kit which has everything you need if you are wanting to go big in the business. Rodan & Fields always ask people to imagine:

Rodan & Fields are just ONE of a great many direct selling companies out there, but we just love Diane’s passion for the product and also for wanting to share the potential business opportunities with other women, especially mums like ourselves! Supporting our families financially is such an important part of life these days, as our expenses continue to increase, and equally important is the flexibility and creativity needed to operate a business opportunity around the needs of our families and lifestyles.
