If you have been wondering what’s been happening at Inexterior recently, you are not alone. For those who aren’t in the know, it’s been a little confusing to see the clearance sale signs and closing down messages on social media, only to realize that the café is actually STILL open, and the locals are loving it! So we ventured in to satisfy our own curiosity, and sat down to chat with owners Jamie and Tracey, and were just thrilled with what we found!
Jamie and Tracey grew up in Camperdown and have both worked in the hospitality industry since finishing school. Jamie took on a chef’s apprenticeship in Weipa Far North Queensland, then worked in Cairns and Melbourne before teaching new chefs at Fed Uni and sharing his passion with diners at Red Peppa and then Europa for 12 years in Ballarat. Tracey too has worked in hospitality and today is the financial manager for the café and works front of house when she can. The pair have 2 beautiful boys who are 5 and 7, and live out of town with their pet dog, cat, budgies and cockateils, so they are able to get back to nature and the relaxed lifestyle that drew them back to Ballarat after so long away and give their own family some of the childhood experiences that they had themselves on a dairy farm and a small country town. Jamie says coming back to Ballarat was like a breath of fresh air, literally! The people are friendlier, it’s so much easier to get around, and it’s more relaxed and definitely more affordable than Melbourne.
Jamie is also super active, so Ballarat is the perfect central spot to get to his favourite outdoors activities like running, mountain biking, cycling, rock climbing, windsurfing and, of course, spending time with Tracey and the kids. And that’s how Inexterior Café came to be where it is now, they both love food and always wanted to have their own business one day, but then having small children they found it was hard to go out for a coffee or a meal as the kids often would not sit still. So when the opportunity came up to take on the café and the larger space in the adjoining building we just had a lightbulb moment! They already had the nice cosy area and the outdoor seating, but now the parents can come in, relax, and enjoy a chat with their friends while having a relaxed coffee or meal and the kids can play and run around freely. It’s great because everyone in the room is generally with a child or a group of kids, so everyone understands that it might get noisy or messy, but our quite customers without kids can still sit down stairs and have a business coffee or enjoy the morning paper.
