You might remember a couple of months back I mentioned having a new person on our team. She is an absolute treasure, and has been working away on some little gold nuggets of info for you! So today I wanted to introduce her to you, and share some of those gold nuggets!
Ange, is a mum to 3 primary school boys and is an incredibly busy woman! Managing her kids, appointments, volunteering at the boys’ school as well as the Brown Hill Community Hub. So even before I met her, I knew she was going to be perfect for our team. Before kids she was working in admin as an office manager, and had everything I knew we would need! Drive. Creativity. And a true passion for her community and her kids.
So over the past couple of weeks, Ange has been working diligently behind the screen updating our Directories.
Now these aren’t just ANY directories. This is not the Yellow Pages. Each of our directories is a list of businesses / services in Ballarat who have been recommended to us by YOU guys, or the businesses have contacted us themselves. And in lots of cases they are places we have been ourselves! We don’t have any fancy technology running our directories, we keep it super simple. BUT, Ange has helped us to implement a couple of really cool little features, that are going to make YOUR life and your experience on our website more enjoyable and helpful.
Gold Nugget #1
Printer Friendly Button
Now, I know what you’re thinking. You’ve seen Print Friendly buttons on the internet for years. Yep, you have. But not on our website. You know, in all the mountain of other things we do, that was one thing that slipped our (my) mind in the initial days of building the website. SO, now when you are browsing around, and you see something you want to keep forever on your fridge. Or you read an article you think your BFF will love, you can hit that pretty little green button and get it in a nice simple layout minus the pictures.
You can either print it out, or save it as a PDF, so you can save stuff on your phone too, or email it easily to a friend.
You can even DELETE stuff from the print friendly version when it pops up, so you ONLY save the stuff you actually want or need.
So darn simple. But so darn helpful!
Gold Nugget #2
So we just told you about the print friendly button, and now you’re like… WHAT? Checkboxes? What on earth is this woman on about? How are “checkboxes” super cool?
Well, when you have a massive long list of local attractions to visit, or free activities to do, or kid friendly restaurants to try. Or trying to find a Birthday Party venue. Now you can PRINT that baby out, put it on the fridge AND tick them off as you go! Or cross off the ones you don’t like or don’t want.
Like I said, it’s not rocket science, it’s not even “fancy technology” but super cool simple features like this just make our Directories even better for you!
So as awesome as Ange is, remember I said she was also super busy. So the checkboxes are not on EVERY directory just yet (and they aren’t necessarily relevant on every directory either), but you’ll start to see them pop up over the next few weeks. The ones I mentioned so far, are there. Parties, attractions, activities, family dining etc.
Some days, I think to myself… gee I wish I knew where I could find “all the local mums who make baby clothes that I can use for a gift” or “who are the best local interior designers for Ballarat family homes”. And then I remember “HAHAHA, well, there is nobody else out there doing this, I better go find out myself and tell everyone else! and make a directory out of it!” Seriously, these are actual “to do” items on our team project list!
But just for an example. When I had a new born, I desperately needed to know all the drive through servos and other places I could go without getting out of the car or leaving my baby unattended, so THAT, my friends, is an actual thing you can find here. As well as the regular things like dance classes, pharmacies, day trips, volunteer opportunities, markets, health food stores, you name it!
AND if you do name it, but you can’t find it there, please ask! We are always looking for new ideas on directories, and the more relevant they are to you guys, the better it is for everyone! And if you have a business or group you’d like to list on one of our directories, get in touch.

PS. When you are browsing the directories. You are always welcome to leave comments to tell us about other places / services to add to the list, or leave a review with your experiences!
And if you’re an instragrammer, get online and use our new hashtag #BallaratFamilyReviews and help others find your local gold nuggets of handiness!
