Over the weekend (May 11th to be precise) I had the absolute pleasure of meeting 120 beautiful mums, aunties and sisters at a charity event organised by myself & a bunch of other local women in honour of Mother’s Day, and over $5,000 for Eureka Mums.
And it struck me, all the people involved in organising, all the generous businesses who donated goods & services AND the women who run Eureka Mums, we were ALL, almost 100% Women in Small Businesses in Ballarat!
I’m talking the mum with a hobby she loves and does it for fun, to the woman who manages a team of 20 staff in a physical office in town!
But no matter the size, they ALL have one thing in common! They are following a dream, or chasing a better outcome for whatever they aspire to.
Even Eureka Mums! This is a young charity, started by one mum just a few years ago who had a vision and went for it! From the tiny shed they started in, they have grown to a huge warehouse, and are STILL busting at the seams with all the donations from local people wanting to help families in need.
Then earlier in the week I attended a great talk by my mate Trav Munro, which was all about giving yourself permission to chase your “better”…whatever that means for you. More money, more freedom, better house, better relationship. Whatever it is that better means to you. And he said something I loved.
By making yourself a priority and working on your “better” you give your children permission to do the same.
How true is that! Would we sit around and tell our kids that they are useless? Or they are shit at whatever it is they enjoy doing? Would we tell them to give it up, it’s just a phase. Or don’t bother because they won’t succeed?
HELL NO! We would not!
So why is it that we tell ourselves these stories, in our minds, over and over, and feel like we have to sacrifice our happiness in order to provide for our families?
We should be out there doing whatever it is that makes our hearts sing. Doing work we love, where time stands still and it is no sacrifice because we just love what we are doing, as much as we love our kids!
If that is serving up cocktails in a bar like Tom Cruise…hell yeah! Go for it. If it’s taking on the epic adventure of starting your own business….why not??? If it’s training to climb a mountain! Get out there and start climbing! Encourage yourself, the way you would encourage your kids. And do what you love.
People just like You, and just like Me, who are out there doing something they love, something they are passionate about, and something that they believe can make the world a better place! Even if it’s only with one person at a time in little old Ballarat.
- I met a woman who’s HOUSE BURNT DOWN in the Black Saturday fires, and went from a sales rep to helping people with their health!
- I’ve met a couple who opened their own cafe in Ballarat after travelling the entire country working in restaurants for other people.
- I met a Dad who crusades around the whole of Australia trying to teach teenagers about road safety after his daughter was killed in a car accident 20 years ago!
- A mum who took 15 years to get pregnant!!! And now helps others with infertility.
It’s just unbelievable the number of inspirational stories I have heard from people you would walk past in the street! They are not familiar faces in the community, they aren’t on mainstream media, they are just doing their thing quietly as they go, because they love it and believe in it.
So I would love to know, what are YOU doing that you love? Is it a job? A business? A hobby? A personal challenge you are working towards? What is happening in your life that makes you want to get up in the morning and be a better you for your family?
